Particulate matter (PM) is a significant threat to the environment and human health, and plants, particularly leafy trees and bushes, can effectively accumulate harmful substances for air phytoremediation. Urbanization leads to a scarcity of biologically active areas, partially mitigated by green roofs. Combining phytoremediation with green roofs offers a positive ecological solution. This study examined leaves of perennial plants on green roofs for PM accumulation during spring, summer, and autumn in Warsaw and Sanok. The study also tested for heavy metals in the accumulated particles. Results indicated that the vegetation phase affects PM accumulation, with the highest deposition in Sanok during autumn and in Warsaw during spring. Sedum L. had the highest PM accumulation, while Betula L. showed the highest concentration of heavy metals in the suspended dust.

Research outcomes
Is the research a precursor to expected follow up research?
Personally, I do not plan to conduct further research, but the work can be used for more detailed and extensive analysis or to support theses in scientific studies
How does the research address the issue of water stewardship?
no
How does the research address the human well-being aspects of GI?
By influencing the reduction of pollutants in the air
How does the research address the economic aspects of GI?
no
How does the research address the environmental sustainability aspects of GI?
By analyzing the ability of plants on green roofs to reduce air pollution
How does the research address social aspects of GI?
Green spaces in cities can help improve the mental balance of residents. Green roofs can serve as rooftop gardens, parks, and spaces for urban agriculture, which can enhance the quality of life of urban residents
How does the research address the topic of biodiversity?
The research takes biodiversity into account by analyzing different plant species on green roofs.
What types of GI multifuncionality are addressed by the nominated research?
no
Does the research support innovation?
The research supports innovation through the introduction and analysis of green roofs as a green solution in cities. In particular, green roofs can be applied to densely built-up areas, an innovative way to green cities and adapt to climate change
