Research outcomes
Is the research a precursor to expected follow up research?
The authors predict research of different methods and technologies for wastewater purification and reuse, including constructed wetlands, improving use water efficiency in variable versions of the Bio-Morpheme.
How does the research address the issue of water stewardship?
Based on the calculations and studies of unit indicators of water consumption performed, the authors confirm the hypothesis that the introduction of Bio-Morpheme as a housing unit, taking into account the optimisation of rainwater use, would allow – under average European climatic conditions – for a reduction in tap water intake by no less than 40% (average 47%) compared to classical solutions, without reducing the unit amount of water (expressed in L/Mk*d) available to users (which is an indicator of the comfort of the use of water and wastewater infrastructure) (see Fig. 10 ).
How does the research address the human well-being aspects of GI?
A view of water and greenery can enhance subjective wellbeing ( Summers et al., 2012 ). The partial opening towards the south would provide proper insolation during cold months ( Vlahov and Galea, 2003 ). The water reservoir could lower the interior's temperature during summer and induce ascending air currents, enhancing cross-ventilation ( Lenzholzer, 2015 ).
How does the research address the economic aspects of GI?
This characteristic (of a Morpheme) enables a significant reduction in the load on urban water supply and sewerage networks, which in turn results in the following benefits to the infrastructure: − When designing new neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the existing built-up areas, it will be possible to connect to the infrastructure – without its expansion - more inhabitants than is the case when using conventional solutions. − In the case of densification, it is possible to locate new buildings in attractive areas (already partly built-up) without costly reconstructions of the water supply and sewerage systems.
How does the research address the environmental sustainability aspects of GI?
The Bio-Morpheme proposal is aligned with the postulated policy trajectory of shaping a healthy city which would host a healthy housing environment ( Corburn, 2009 ). The size and proportions of an interior allow the planting of a social garden, the implementation of a surface water reservoir, and provides access to nature.
How does the research address social aspects of GI?
no
How does the research address the topic of biodiversity?
no
What types of GI multifuncionality are addressed by the nominated research?
BGI
Does the research support innovation?
“Bio-Morpheme as an innovative design concept for 'Bio City' urban structure in the context of water-saving and human health” (Stanisław M. Rybicki, Grażyna Schneider-Skalska, Jadwiga Stochel-Cyunel): https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0959652622028529 Elsevier highlighted the work as it “linked the article to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, helping to tackle some of the world’s greatest challenges.”
