Project specifications
This Green wall is installed in a indoor pool lounge of high end luxury residential tower in south Bombay. The elegant lounge was envisaged as a cozy private space where residents can enjoy swimming as a leisure activity. To block the view of surrounding Residential buildings, the green screen was planned which also allowed residents to have close connect with nature. The design intent was to bring nature into the built environment through landscaping & Architecture. All the design elements with Greenwall, subtle ray lighting and its reflection in water creates a perfect setting like pond reflecting nature around. Green wall has given visually appealing touch to this recreational space. The challenge was proximity to the pool, limited access for maintenance, no natural light. Hence ELT Living wall system with ELT LIVING FOAM substrate was chosen. Plants selection was done carefully owing to constrained indoor atmosphere. The strategy, planning, execution & Maintenance have ensured the

Method of establishment of vegetation
A thorough planning, comprehensive Approach & site assessment played key role in establishing plants in this Green wall. After finalising Plant Varieties, saplings grown in Soilless media were planted in ELT Living wall panels. These Pre-grown Panels were installed at site. The intention of pre-growing planted panels was to ensure plants are fully grown well in advance before actual installation at site. It took us about 8 weeks to propagate, grow & establish the Plants in Green wall Panels. Irrigation for the Green wall is being done using 16 mm INLINE with 2 Lph Drippers placed at 150 mm c/c distance. Water soluble fertilisers & pesticides, fungicides are applied through Drip irrigation. Preventive insecticide sprays are taken at regular intervals. Trimming is done periodically to establish consistent greenery. Post DLP of 1 year, maintenance is taken up by ELT India.
Vegetation
As all the Green walls are in Poolside Lounge & seen prominently, Client & Site co-ordinating team had clearly expressed to have Uniform Greenery round the year that too with minimal maintenance requirements. Nearness to water body, air conditioning round the year with ambient temperature around 20-24 degrees, Indoor Green wall in controlled climate with no natural light made Plant selection very crucial. Plants were finalized after detailed analysis of the site conditions, experiences, access, visibility, planting cavity size of ELT Living wall panel, expected effect and available maintenance access & requirement. Epipremnum JADE & Epipremnum NEON were chosen as they are low light tolerant, can sustain in less water & require less pest management. Use of 2 colours added visual appeal with lush Green vegetation, creating calming but interesting effect. These 2 varieties grow fast & can be trimmed & trained to get consistent verdant effect.
Vegetation layer
Plant Palette was chosen considering the unique location, proximity to swimming pool, visibility throughout the year & micro-climatic conditions of site, specially low light intensity. 4 smaller Green wall Strips adjacent to Pool are of single Green variety. Vertical bands of GOLD were added in the 2 bigger Green walls not just to break the monotony of the green but also to match the Geometry of lights in the ceiling. ELT LIVING FOAM provides the anchorage to the vegetation & required nutrients are provided through Irrigation system at regular interval. There are about 9500 plants in this green wall. All the plants were propagated & grown in Soilless media at our Pune facility & later on transferred to ELT LIVING FOAM sandwiches. Pre-grown Foam Sandwiches were inserted in Planting cavities in about 4 weeks from plant shifting. Such pre-planted panels when installed at site gave ready look on day 1. No damages to plants or mortality was observed in the plants after site installation.
Retention layer
No separate Retention layer is used for this Green wall. ELT Living wall Panel together with ELT LIVING FOAM wrapped in Geotextile acts as Retention layer. Each planting cell of the panel stores approx. 100 ml water. ELT LIVING FOAM stores exactly the right balance of water and air to optimize plant growth. It can absorb moisture faster when dehydrated. It has improved water retention & water movement. This has reduced irrigation frequency to once a week during summer & once in a 15 Days during rains & winter, with each irrigation cycle of about 18-20 Minutes for entire Green wall thus bringing down the overall water requirement. ELT LIVING FOAM offers unlimited potential to bring the benefits of smart water management in Vertical Gardens.
Filtration layer
As ELT LIVING FOAM substrate is used, there is as good as no fine particles or debris coming out of the system. Geotextile further prevents escape of any loose particle. ELT LIVING FOAM wrapped in Geotextile acts as Filtration layer, as it retains growth media, allows water to pass through, prevents fine particles entering & clogging the drain. As life of ELT LIVING FOAM substrate is more than 10 years, there is no need to replace it nor does it require any addition.
Drainage layer
No separate Drainage layer is required for this Green wall system. ELT LIVING WALL PANEL has built-in reservoir with dedicated drain chamber provided at the base. This opening drains excess water into the module below it. Water does not escape anywhere else. The shape of the space created between the modules allows dripline to hide inside, but only half way so that it does not interfere the drain path. ELT LIVING FOAM stores exactly the right balance of water and air to optimize plant growth. It can be rehydrated faster. It has improved water retention & Easy Movement of water through this media ensures efficient drainage of excess water, there is no stagnation of water around the rootzone. Overflow of water if any is collected in the drain trays provided at the base of each strip. These drain trays are further connected to the drain point provided by Client. All this together ensure healthy & stable growth of plants.
Separate layer
ELT LIVING WALL PANEL prevents penetration of roots into green wall structure. It prevents spillage & leakage of water. It’s design avoids water escaping along dripline due to viscosity. Any excess water drains into the lower panel by gravity, process repeats further. So there is no waterlogging within Green wall. ELT Living wall panel holds the ELT LIVING FOAM substrate in place. A dedicated Space for placing slow release fertilizers is provided in each planting cavity of the panel. Geotextile wrapped around ELT LIVING FOAM allows water to pass through but prevents washing out of media and clogging of drain, retains moisture & provides root anchorage. Both components together enhance overall performance by ensuring proper water drainage, aeration, and nutrient distribution.
Protective layer
Client had provided waterproofed surface. ELT LIVING WALL PANEL are installed on frame which is 2” away from the wall, thus there is no chance of moisture getting trapped behind the Green wall. PPCP made panel ensures that plant roots do not penetrate & damage the structure. Pre-grown Living Wall Panels are hung directly on the appropriate brackets or support structure of main frame and fastened. Each Living wall panel is closed from all sides except front side with dedicated irrigation chamber at the top & Drain chamber at the bottom. Dripline is held in place and emits water in the irrigation chamber, so there is no spillage of water. Excess water is drained directly into the lower module thus there is 100% control over the irrigated water. Typical design accommodates the irrigation & drain in such a way that the water emitted by dripline and the water coming out of drain window of upper module reaches the water chamber of lower module without spillage.
Root layer
ELT LIVING WALL PANEL (Design Patent No. 300639) of size 300 mmx300 mmx12 mm, consists of 10 individual cells. Each cell is independently designed to contain enough space to hold growth media & vegetation, to sustain water supply to the roots, provides drainage, stores water, provide irrigation within each panel. ELT LIVING FOAM a structural media, is a combination of heterogenous organic fibre processed with inorganic material made of hydrophilic foam, formed along with composite ingredients. It is structurally stable, physically non-spilling, Light weight, able to take any regular or irregular shapes with optimum aeration and capillary capacity. It provides proper root anchorage by giving optimal space to white roots. ELT LIVING FOAM is wrapped in 180 GSM Geotextile made of recycled synthetic fibre to form a sandwich in which saplings are grown. Life of the media under best ELT practices is more than 10 years. Weight per sft when fully saturated with water is less than 15 kg.
