COMPETITION conditions

 

I. COMPETITION ORGANIZER

1. The Organizer of the competition is the World Green Infrastructure Network, with its registered office at Društvo WGIN, Trata 31, SI-4220 Škofja Loka, Slovenia, EU; ID Nr.: 2709481000, VAT Nr.: 84998911, website: www.wgin.org, e-mail: aslanjonoubi@gmail.com

 

2. The Organizer issues these rules for The World Green Infrastructure Award. The Organizer reserves the right to change these rules at any time by publishing changes or a new version on its website.

II. OBJECTIVE OF THE COMPETITION

1. The competition aims to spread examples of excellence and best practices in the field of building integrated greening and other green infrastructure and associated academic research, student work, and policy.

 

2. The competition seeks to inspire innovation and quality in new in green infrastructure design and development by recognizing and rewarding the collaborative efforts of investors, planners, contractors, designers, researchers, students and municipalities.

 

3.Our Awards celebrate those realized projects that demonstrate best practice and show the many ways in which green infrastructure improves our places and spaces for the benefit of communities locally and the environment globally.

 

III. DURATION OF THE COMPETITION

1. The competition will accept nominations from May 25th, 2024 until June 30th, 2024. Awarded nominations will be announced at the World Green Infrastructure Congress in Auckland, New Zealand to be held September 3rd-5th, 2024.

 

IV. COMPETITORS AND SUBJECT MATTER OF THE COMPETITION

1. The competition may be entered by any natural person who has reached the age of 18 and/or a legal entity that meets the conditions of the competition (hereinafter referred to as the "applicant" or "competitor").

2. Works completed or approved no later than the date of submission to the competition, as of the opening date for submitting nominations may be submitted. Detailed requirements for each category can be found in the descriptions of the individual categories.

 

3. There is no requirement of membership in WGIN for submission of nominations. Nominations may be submitted by both public and private sector competition participants.

 

4. Multiple nominations may be submitted per developer/planner/Investor etc..

V. COMPETITION CATEGORIES

1. Green Roofs 

All types of vegetated Green Roofs constructed over built spaces will be considered. For the purpose of this competition a green roof is defined as a vegetated roof.

2. Green Walls

Green façades / living walls constructed on all types of built spaces will be considered. This can be solutions with vines/climbers, modular greening, planter boxes or hybrid versions. It must have the potential to be a “World Class Project”. The award is not limited to only new projects. Older existing projects are highly welcome, to see the success of this project in the last years.

 

Judgement criteria:

- Size of the project,

- Complexity in methods (also in combination with roofs-/Indoor greening),

- Biodiversity, 

- Usability,

- Creative and/or easy to maintain,

- Low impact environmental design

3. Green Neighborhood Scale and On-grade Projects

Urban landscape projects which incorporate vegetative planting and landscape design. Primary consideration will be given to projects which display a multifunctionality approach to climate adaptation, have specific impact on mitigating Urban Heat Island Effects, and also improve stormwater management during peak rain events. Secondary consideration will be given to project outcomes with social benefits (for example, biophilic design); economic benefits; and environmental benefits (for example, total carbon footprint management.) Projects with integrated data collection, monitoring and research activities will be specially recognized.

There is no restriction on the scale of the project within its urban context.

 

4. Green Infrastructure Policy

The Green Infrastructure Policy Award will recognize and highlight excellence in public or private sector policies that promote best practice and accelerated uptake of urban green infrastructure. The award aims to primarily recognize policy supporting building integrated green infrastructure, but other types of urban green infrastructure may be considered.

Nominations may include, but will not be limited to, policy:

 - aiming specifically at building integrated green infrastructure on all types of built spaces

 - aiming at neighborhood scale effects, either building integrated or on-grade green infrastructure

 - aiming at activity that acts as a significant driver for improved and accelerated uptake of green infrastructure, f.eks. increasing knowledge, supporting awareness, influencing financing and economic incentives, supporting pilot projects, driving innovation and development etc..

 

5. Green Infrastructure Research and Academic Work

The category will recognize performance and excellence in activities and projects in both the public and private sectors related to architecture and socioeconomics.

The subjects of research and academic work may include:

- Architectural design 

- Urban agriculture and biodiversity

- Socioeconomic improvements with green infrastructure

- Artificial intelligence applications for green infrastructure

- New knowledge patents

- Human health and well being

- Landscape design and recreation

- Water and energy management

- Green infrastructure related climate adaptation 

 

6. Green Infrastructure Student Posters

The Green Infrastructure Student Posters Award invites students worldwide to showcase their innovative ideas and projects in the field of green infrastructure. The award will recognize posters that present original research, case studies, or conceptual designs related to green infrastructure. The content should be clear, concise, and visually engaging, demonstrating the student’s understanding and application of green infrastructure principles.

The topics for this category may include but are not limited to:

  • Urban Greening

  • Green Roofs and Walls

  • Sustainable Drainage Systems

  • Green Transport Infrastructure

  • Green Spaces and Parks

  • Ecosystem Services

  • Climate Change Adaptation

 

VI. SUBMISSION OF WORKS
1. Nominations may be submitted to the competition by a natural or legal person who is: 

- the designer of the project,

- the owner of the facility,

- the contractor of the project

- the author of a research paper/poster,

- an NGO advocating for green infrastructure

- an employee of a public sector body or private organization with interests and/or connections to green infrastructure projects, research or policies.

 

2. One applicant may submit a maximum of two nominations per category. If the same project/work is nominated by different entities, the nomination submitted first will be considered.

VII. COMPETITION DOCUMENTATION

1. The competition participant fills out the nomination form published on the Organizer's website. 

 

2. In the submission of a nomination it is necessary to precisely submit all data required for the category. An overview of the required data may be obtained by entering the relevant category on the online nomination platform.

 

3. The application must be accompanied by photographic and other actual documentation (JPG or TIFF in print quality, or pdf documents depending on the category. Credits for the photograph must be submitted with the photographic documentation; if credits are not submitted, it will be assumed that the nominator holds copyrights to the photo.

4. The Organizer reserves the right to invite the nominator to supplement the submitted nomination if deemed necessary to support the judging process.

VIII. ARCHIVING OF DOCUMENTATION

1. The nominator declares that she/he is authorized to grant the Organizer, on behalf of all copyright owners, consent to the use of the supplied materials in the competition, and that by submitting the application he does not infringe the copyright or other rights of third parties, and is also authorized to grant the Organizer a license to use the work and its components in accordance with point 2 (immediately following this point.)

 

2. By participating in the competition, each contestant grants the Organizer free license for a period of 10 years to use the technical, photographic, drawing or other documentation provided by the nominator for the purposes of this competition, in particular for use: (i) for the purpose of judging the nomination, promoting the competition, publishing the work, evaluating the competition and announcing the results of the competition, as well as (ii) for the purpose of green infrastructure advocacy.

1. The competition and the works submitted to it may be presented globally at any conference, in any national media, at professional seminars, conferences, and on social networks.

 

2. Materials and documentation submitted with nominations shall not be used for commercial purposes without the express consent of the owner or copyright holder.

 

3. By applying, the nominator gives her/his consent to the publication of the entire supplied documentation of this work in the press, at exhibitions of competitive works and in connection with the dissemination of information, promotion and publicity of the competition. For these purposes, the applicant provides graphic, photographic and text materials in digital form. 

 

X. JURY AND COMPETITION EVALUATION

The composition of the juries will be published on the website of the award program. The juries may request expert opinions or statements to assess aspects of the nominations related to individual criteria.

2. The submitted nominations will be evaluated by an expert jury. Results about winners and honorable mentions will be announced at the World Green Infrastructure Congress 2024. Distribution of press releases and publications on the WGIN website, national association websites and social media will follow within 2 weeks of the announcements. The date of publication of the results may be changed due to unexpected events.

6. If fewer than  5  nominations are submitted for a category, and if the quality of nominations is deemed by the jury to fall short of the “world class” standard of the competition, the jury may decide to not determine an award for that category.

XI. AWARDS

1. The juries will determine an award winner for each category (if section X.6 doesn’t apply.) In addition, the juries may award honorable mentions for up to 3 other nominations for each category.

 

2. The organizer of the competition will announce the World Green Infrastructure Award 2024 results based on the decisions of the judges of each category at the WGIC in Auckland, New Zealand on 4.09.2024 and on the website www.wgin.org

 

XIII. GENERAL PROVISIONS

1. By participating in the competition (participating in the competition), the nominator agrees to these competition rules and other regulations that may apply to the competition. The Organizer reserves the right to interpret individual provisions of these rules.

2. The nominatory undertakes to provide the Organizer with all necessary cooperation related to the Competition and undertakes to respect the instructions of the Organizer.

XIV. PROCESSING OF PERSONAL DATA

1. By participating in the competition, the nominator gives the Organizer free of charge in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data and Act no. 18/2018 Coll. on the protection of personal data and on amendments to certain acts, free, voluntary, serious, certain, comprehensible and not granted under duress or under unfavourable conditions, consent to the processing of their personal data in the scope of: name and surname, e-mail address, contact telephone number, contact postal address, or other personal data necessary for participation in the competition for the purpose of: (i) identifying and contacting the awardees, (ii) handing over the award directly to the Organizers, whether by a contractual partner of the Sponsor involved in organizing the competition or a contractual partner involved in the delivery of consignments; (iii) promotional activities of the Organizer carried out through well-known communication channels.

2. The nominator acknowledges that he/she may withdraw his/her consent assigned to the given purpose at any time. The withdrawal of this consent will not affect the lawfulness of the processing of personal data before the withdrawal of consent.

3. The operator of the information system informs the nominator that, as the data subject, he/she has in particular the following rights: 

a) the right of access to his/her personal data, 

b) the right to rectification of inaccurate or incorrect data and completion of incomplete data, 

c) the right to erasure if the purpose of processing ceases to exist or if personal data are processed illegally, 

d) the right to restrict the processing of personal data, 

e) the right to object to the processing of personal data, including profiling, 

f) the right to data portability, on the basis of which the data subject may obtain personal data concerning him or her in a structured and machine-readable format, either for himself/herself or for another personal data controller, 

g) the right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority, which is Information Commissioner, Dunajska Cesta 22, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia, EU,

h) regarding the processing of personal data, and may contact the, Data Protection Officer, via the following e-mail address: dpo@ip-rs.si

 

4. Conditions for the processing of personal data: The Organizer processes personal data itself or through intermediaries. Intermediaries process personal data to the extent and under the conditions agreed with the Organizer in accordance with applicable law. The retention period of personal data is usually 5 years from the announcement of the results of the competition according to these Rules.

5. The Organizer shall maintain appropriate technical, administrative and physical means and measures to protect personal data against accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, unauthorized alteration, unauthorized disclosure and access, misuse. Personal data in the company is processed only by persons who have been authorized to process personal data and have been properly trained.

XV. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

 

1. The Organizer shall not be liable for unauthorized interference with the rights of third parties in connection with the creation, publication, and dissemination of technical, photographic, and drawing (or any other) documentation provided for the competition; The participant who provided the tender documents is solely responsible for the related damage. If the photos will be of natural persons, it is necessary that the competitor has consent from the author of the photo and the persons concerned to publish it, as he bears full legal responsibility for the published photos.

 

2. The Organizer shall not bear any costs incurred by participants in connection with their participation in the competition. 

XVI. FINAL PROVISIONS

1. The competition announced by the Organizer is not a game of chance within the meaning of Act no. 30/2019 Coll. on gambling and on amendments to certain acts as amended, nor a public competition within the meaning of § 847 et seq. of Act no. 40/1964 Coll. Civil Code, as amended. Prizes and any winnings are not legally enforceable.

 

2. The Organizer reserves the right, in case of reasonable suspicion of fraud, abuse, or error regarding the proper organization of the Competition: (i) to terminate or suspend the Competition, (ii) to change the Contest Terms and Conditions or (iii) without prior notice and any compensation, to block or exclude from the Competition a participant who acted contrary to the Competition Rules or contrary to good morals or damaged the reputation and reputation of the Organizer in any way. The Organizer is entitled to delete from its social media profiles any posts of the excluded participant, as well as any other posts contrary to good morals
